The Health Benefits of Salmon

Salmon is a type of fish found in both fresh and salt water. There are several species of salmon, such as the sockeye, pink, coho, chum, chinook, and Atlantic. Salmon is not only tasty but has considerable health benefits; when baked, broiled, seared or grilled, salmon is among the most heart-healthy of dishes.

Omega 3

Omega 3 fatty acids are a type of essential fatty acid. The body cannot make them on its own and requires intake from food or vitamins in order to supply the nutrients. Omega 3 promotes healthy joints and skin, reduces the risk of heart disease and aids in neurological development in unborn children. Atlantic salmon has the highest concentration of omega 3 in the salmon family, at 1.9 grams per 2-oz. fillet. The American Heart Association recommends that adults have two servings of omega 3 per week to maintain optimal health benefits. According to the Worlds Healthiest Foods, omega 3 improves heart muscle function and reduces the risks of deadly heart arrhythmia.

Protein

Salmon contains up to 58 percent of the daily required intake of protein per 4-oz. serving. Salmon contains essential amino acids that promote growth and help maintain muscle tissue mass. The protein found in salmon helps the body maintain metabolism at levels to promote weight loss. Eating salmon three or more days a week will also help you feel full longer. It can be eaten with a serving of fresh steamed vegetables for a heart-healthy dinner that will give you energy and ease hunger pangs.

Low Fat

Salmon is low in fat and calories. The average 4-oz. fillet contains around 183 calories and 10 grams of fat unprepared. If you grill the fillet or broil without using butter or oil, the salmon retains its healthy effects. Make sure you prepare and cook the salmon in a clean area and thoroughly cook the fish to prevent illness such as salmonella, which can cause extreme gastrointestinal discomfort. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute states that in order to maintain good cholesterol levels and prevent heart disease, foods low in fat and calories will help obtain optimal cardiovascular health. The institute suggests getting less than 30 percent of your calories from fat and up to 10 percent from saturated fat.

Vitamins and Minerals

Salmon provides a good source of some essential vitamins you need for a healthy lifestyle. A 4-oz. baked fillet will give you more than 100 percent of your daily value of vitamin D and over 50 percent of vitamins B2 and B12 in just one serving. Vitamin D promotes healthy bones and teeth, and may help decrease your risk of developing multiple sclerosis and certain types of cancer.

The Cholesterol Lie: What Your Doctor Doesn't Know

Cholesterol does not cause heart disease, according to 15 years of research.

- LDL ("bad cholesterol") and HDL ("good cholesterol") are actually proteins, not cholesterol.

- According to research, heart disease is caused by the food additives glucose and fructose.

Cholesterol is necessary for life, is made by the liver, and occurs in almost all living organisms.

Many heart attack victims have normal cholesterol levels.

High fructose corn syrup, added to many processed foods and colas, is the number one source of calories in the US. This explains why so many people have heart disease and diabetes.

Diabetes is reversible in at least 95% of all cases.

Good nutrition causes LDL particles to be larger, which is important because this keeps them from getting stuck during transport and causing damage.

Cholesterol drugs do not affect particle size, have serious side effects, and kill thousands of people each year.

Food to Consume To Lower Cholesterol

There is a saying that goes. "We are what we eat." This is so true as the food being consumed may affect the cholesterol levels inside the person’s system. This makes this makes the person prone to high blood pressure or heart disease through age, which could leave the patient, paralyzed or dead.

The only thing to do before it is too late is to make some changes in the individual's diet. While many of the good stuff that people love to eat have high concentrations of LDL better known as bad cholesterol, this can all change by consuming those that have HDL or good cholesterol. Here are a few examples.

A good way to start a healthy diet is to have a breakfast. Instead of eating bread, the individual can consume oatmeal instead. Studies have shown this can lower the cholesterol in the body by more than 20% after just two weeks of use. This figure can go down some more if this becomes a habit before going to work.

It is tough to just have oatmeal in the morning. Sometimes, the individual can have a fruit. An example could be an apple.

Studies have shown that people who eat at least 2 full apples a day or drink 12 ounces of apple juice are able to reduce the chances of heart diseases by 50%. This can be purchased at the supermarket and eaten during anytime of the day such as dessert after a light meal or as a snack.

During lunch or dinner, the person must have some vegetables in the meal. Those who order can have fish or poultry instead of eating red meat. Such dishes are not high in saturated fats, which are healthier.

Those who love to cook at home can try mixing some healthy things ingredients in the meal. One example is garlic that has natural properties that can declog the arteries and again lower the odds of succumbing to heart disease.

Having a can of pork and beans is also good for the diet. This is because it contains soluble fibers that can combat the bad cholesterol in the person's body. There are not that many people who will do this but those who are able to eat even a half an onion daily will be able to increase the HDL and lower the LDL.

People are often told that fats are not good for the diet. This isn’t entirely true because this comes in many forms. There are fats that are healthy such as unsaturated ones and omega 3 fatty acids.

Monosaturated and Polysaturated ones are also effective since these are usually found in cooking oils. This means food preparation also plays a big factor in reducing lowering one’s cholesterol levels.

The individual should read the label at the supermarket and read the ingredients to find out if this is healthy for cooking.

Being a bit overweight or noticing a lot of bulges in the body is one way of knowing that the person is potentially at risk for succumbing to disease to high levels of cholesterol in the system.

If the individual is unable to make a proper dietary plan, a specialist can help make one so all the person has to do is follow it.

Herbal Treatment for High Blood Cholesterol

************************************
Article contributed by Carolus Wong
************************************

I want to share a secret for treating high cholesterol.

Three weeks ago l went for a cholesterol check. To my surprise, it was above the normal range which should be less than 5.2 mmol/L. My reading obtained was 6.6. I had been consuming alot of red meat and lamb recently.

After consuming Mok Yee for two weeks, l had my cholesterol checked again and found that my cholesterol level fell to 4.70 mmol/ L

My pharmacist said that even cholesterol medication will need 1- 3 months to take effect. She was very surprised and said it is a miracle.

I immediately followed an advice of a friend who told me about Black fungus (Mok Yee).

He had four blocked heart arteries, over 90 percent blocked. His cardiologist advised him to go for bypass surgery, failing which he would suffer an imminent heart attack. His sinseh (chinese physician) friend advised him against surgery as the procedure would be messy, painful and expensive..

He followed the advise of his sinseh friend by consuming Mok Yee daily. After consumin g boiled Mok Yee juice for 40 days, he went for an angiogram. His heart specialist was surprised and shocked that his arteries were all cleared of any blockage and it would not be necessary to see him for another 10 years+ ACE -&! nbsp;

My observation is that Mok Yee juice is not only effective in treating high blood cholestrol but also helps to bring relief to joint paints, arthritis and poor blood circulation.

The internet info. claims : that Mok yee reduces blood clot, preventing thrombosis, atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease, and cancer. Black Fungus contains abundant proteins, ferric iron, calcium, vitamins, rough fibre, the content of protein is equal to meat.

Preparation :

1) Pick a handful of Mok Yee and soak in water for 1-2 h! ours
2) Wash Mok Yee and cut to pieces with scissors.
3) Pour five bowls of plain water into slow cooker (crock pot)
4) Put 2-3 slices of ginger, 8-10 red dates, 20 kay chee(wolf berry) into crock pot.
5) Bring to boil for 8 hours. One and a half bowls of Mok Yee juice will remain after boiling overnight.

Consumption :

You may consume for 10 to 14 days according to the severity of the problem.
For those with low blood pressure consume less or only for alternate days.

Drink Mok Yee first thing in the morning with an 'empty stomach'.
Consume at least one large bowl. Take breakfast 2 hours later.

Side effects - you may feel a little tired after 3- 4 days.
Consume multivitamins and fresh fruits and vegetables daily.
Do not eat oily or fried foods during this period.

Observation :

Dark and oily stool during the first two days.

Remarks :

Cholesterol medication is man-made and may harm the liver. Mok Yee is a plant and does not seem to contain chemicals that harm the body.

Omega 3 Fish Oil Supplements : Benefits, Side Effects, and Best Brand.

Omega 3 Fish Oil Supplements : Benefits, Side Effects, and Best Brand

For the last few years, I've been recommending omega 3 fish oil supplements to practically everyone I know. Do you know why that means something? It's because I am FAR from a supplement-person. I barely use anything. Not only do I hate wasting money on junk I don't need or could get from actual foods, I'm also WAY over cautious about side effects and the things I put into my body in general. At the same time, I'm also usually the first one laughing at the supposed "magical" health benefits of all of the weird nutritional products, vitamins, herbs and minerals on the market. Really, I'm the last person to take or recommend any kind of nutritional supplement.

With all of that being said... I've personally been taking and recommending an omega 3 fish oil supplement to practically everyone I know. And that, my friends, should tell you just how useful and important I think it is.

In this article, I'm going to explain exactly why fish oil has become my personal favorite supplement and the only one that I recommend to every single person reading this no matter who you are. I'll explain all of its proven health benefits (yes, scientifically proven) and whether or not there are any side effects (there aren't). I'll explain omega 3 fatty acids in general, talk about how much you should take, and give you my recommendation for the highest quality fish oil supplement brand on the market. Basically, by the end of this article you're going to want to start recommending it to everyone you know, too.

What is it?

The only real reason fish and fish oil are considered so healthy is that they contain the omega 3 fatty acids docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). You know how there are good types of fat and bad types of fat? Well, this is the really good one. Fish just happens to be the best and most abundant source of it.

Omega 3 is an essential fatty acid, which means is cannot be manufactured by our own body and therefore must be obtained through our diet alone. The thing is, most people's diet's contain an insufficient amount of omega 3. Not to mention, they also contain a very high amount of the omega 6 fatty acid. The ideal ratio of the two is something near 2:1. In reality for the average person, it's more like 20:1 or even more. Most people just lack omega 3, which is why a fish oil supplement could be beneficial to pretty much everyone. Speaking of benefits...

What are the benefits of taking an omega 3 fish oil supplement?

It's magical! Ok... that's obviously an exaggeration, but from all of the scientific studies done and all of the medical research known, an omega 3 fish oil supplement is my pick for the closest thing to a real life miracle pill.

Let's take a look at some of its benefits taken directly from MedlinePlus, which is a service of the US National Library of Medicine:

- lowers blood triglyceride levels
- reduces the risk of heart attack
- reduces the risk of dangerous abnormal heart rhythms
- reduces the risk of strokes
- slows the buildup of atherosclerotic plaques
- lowers blood pressure
- reduces stiffness and joint tenderness associated with Rheumatoid arthritis

An omega 3 fish oil supplement may also help improve or prevent the following:

- Alzheimer's disease and dementia
- depression
- heart disease
- cancer
- arthritis
- diabetes
- hyperactivity
- ADHD

has also been shown to improve a person's ability to concentrate and just think clearer in general. And, as if all of this isn't enough, fish oil is also highly recommended by nearly every well respected strength and conditioning coach, trainer, and diet/fitness/nutrition expert of any kind as one of the few supplements that should be taken by anyone with the goal of building muscle, losing fat, or improving their fitness level or athletic ability in any capacity.

Everything mentioned above has at least some amount actual scientific proof behind it. Researching some other sources showed me that some people experienced other benefits not mentioned above. For example, I've heard of people claiming to have improved vision, improved memory, improved mood, and less back pain.

Long story short, a fish oil supplement appears to improve our body's ability to do damn near everything.

For me personally, I feel I experienced some of the mental and physical benefits. I noticed a definite improvement in mental clarity and really just the way I feel in general. Now, I didn't develop any kind of super powers or anything, but after a couple of weeks, I felt like I noticed a difference. I remember reading the phrase "an enhanced well being" when doing my fish oil research. That's a really good way of describing it. And physically, I feel I noticed an improved calorie partitioning effect, meaning when consuming an excess of calories, more calories went towards the building of new muscle rather than the storing of new fat. I also felt a similar effect when in a caloric deficit, meaning my body did a better job of using stored body fat for energy rather than muscle. Basically, I felt I did indeed experience an overall improvement both physically and mentally.

But really, even if I felt exactly 100% the same, I'd still be taking an omega 3 fish oil supplement anyway. Why? Because even if I didn't notice any of its benefits, the fact that there is actual scientific proof that it may help improve or prevent even 1 (let alone all) of the diseases and disorders listed above is MORE than enough convincing for me.

Can't I just eat fish?

Technically, yes. Fatty fish contains omega 3 just the same as a fish oil supplement would. The only problem is that in order to consume a good amount of omega 3 on a regular basis, you would have to consume a good amount of fish on a regular basis. And, in case you haven't heard, due to all of the toxic contaminants found in fish these days (mercury, chlordane, dioxin, PCBs, and more) it is pretty hard to recommend anyone eat fish on daily basis. Fortunately, supplement companies can greatly improve its purity by removing these contaminants. Of course, some brands do this better than others. More on that later.

Are there any side effects?

No, for the most part, there are no side effects. You have to realize here, it's oil from fish. It's not like a dangerous fat burner/muscle builder type product. I mean, do you ask what the side effects are before eating some salmon? I didn't think so. Taking a fish oil supplement is no different than just eating fish (minus the contaminants, of course).

So, for the average healthy person, it's completely safe. Of course, if you are pregnant, allergic to fish, or already have any kind of known health issues, you should check with your doctor first just to be safe.

The only other thing I've heard of that even slightly resembles side effects is "a fishy after taste." And, while this is far from a serious side effect, this appears to only happen if you are taking a low quality fish oil supplement. For example, I've never tasted a hint of fish even for a second in all of the time I've been taking it. (More on which brand I use below.)

How much should I take?

The real question here is how much shouldn't you take. For safety purposes, the FDA recommends no more than 3 grams of combined EPA and DHA per day. For the brand I'm going to recommend below, 1 serving (2 capsules) contains 650mg of EPA and 450mg of DHA. Combined that is 1.1 grams of EPA/DHA. If you took two servings per day (4 capsules), that would be a 2.2 grams of combined EPA/DHA. Even though you're still .8 below the maximum 3 grams per day, I personally wouldn't recommend any more than that.

So, for the specific brand I recommend below, 1 serving (2 capsules) would be perfectly fine, with 2 servings (4 capsules) being a good maximum amount. That would mean staying between 1 and 2 servings per day, which is between 2-4 capsules per day of this specific brand. I personally take 3 capsules of this brand per day. Speaking of brands...

What brand should I use? Is one really better than the others?

This is something I did a lot of research about. Like I mentioned at the very beginning, I'm extremely careful about what I put into my body, which is why I spent a lot of time researching fish oil brands to find out if some were indeed better than others. And, the brand I can definitively say is the highest quality omega 3 fish oil supplement available is Nordic Naturals.

Besides seeing this brand specifically recommended by a handful of doctors, I also read two different consumer reports that performed a variety of tests on a variety of brand name fish oil supplements. And, while most of them passed, Nordic Naturals scored the best. So, yeah, a lot of brands are probably perfectly fine. But for me, when it comes to something like an omega 3 fish oil supplement, I want the best. I've done enough research to be more than confident in the fact that Nordic Naturals is one of, if not THE best. I've been using their brand for quite a while now, and they get my full recommendation.

As for the specifics, I use Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega, which contains significantly more EPA and DHA per capsule than most other brands. This not only means more bang for your buck, but it also means you won't have to take a million capsules per day. There are 120 capsules per bottle, so if you take the recommended 2 capsules per day, you'll only have to order another bottle just 6 times per year. Not bad, not bad at all.

As for where to get it, I order it from here for pretty much the best price I've seen it sold for: Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega

So, there you have it... everything you need to know about my personal favorite supplement, fish oil.

Working Overtime = Serious Heart Problems

By Ben Hirschler

LONDON - People working 10 or 11 hours a day are more likely to suffer serious heart problems, including heart attacks, than those clocking off after seven hours, researchers said on Tuesday.

The finding, from an 11-year study of 6,000 British civil servants, does not provide definitive proof that long hours cause coronary heart disease but it does show a clear link, which experts said may be due to stress.

In all, there were 369 cases of death due to heart disease, non-fatal heart attacks and angina among the London-based study group -- and the risk of having an adverse event was 60 percent higher for those who worked three to four hours overtime.

Working an extra one to two hours beyond a normal seven-hour day was not associated with increased risk.

"It seems there might a threshold, so it is not so bad if you work another hour or so more than usual," said Dr Marianna Virtanen, an epidemiologist at the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health and University College London.

The higher incidence of heart problems among those working overtime was independent of a range of other risk factors including smoking, being overweight or having high cholesterol.

But Virtanen said it was possible the lifestyle of people working long hours deteriorated over time, for example as a result of poor diet or increased alcohol consumption.

More fundamentally, long hours may be associated with work-related stress, which interferes with metabolic processes, as well as "sickness presenteeism," whereby employees continue working when they are ill.

Virtanen and colleagues published their findings in the European Heart Journal.

Commenting on the study, Gordon McInnes, professor of clinical pharmacology at the University of Glasgow's Western Infirmary, said the findings could have widespread implications for doctors assessing patients' heart risks.

"If the effect is truly causal, the importance is much greater than commonly recognized. Overtime-induced work stress might contribute to a substantial proportion of cardiovascular disease," he said.

Chocolate Lowers Risk Of Heart-Related Deaths

Heart attack survivors who eat choccolate two or more times per week can cut their risk of dying from heart disease about threefold compared to those who never touch the stuff, scientist have reported.

Smaller quantities confer less protection but are still better than none, according to the study which will be published in next month's issue of the Journal of Internal Medicine.

Earlier research had established a strong link between cocoa-based confections and lowered blood pressure or improvement in blood flow. It had also shown that chocolate cuts the rate of heart-related mortality in healthy older men and post-menopausal women.

The new study, led by Dr. Imre Janszky of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, is the first to demonstrate that consuming chocolate can help ward off the grim reaper if one has suffered attack.

"It was specific to chocolate - we found no benefits from sweets in general," said Mr. Kenneth Mukamal, a researcher at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston and a co-author of the study.

It seems that antioxidants in cocoa may be contributing to the life-saving property of chocolate, he told AFP.

Antioxidants are compounds that protect the body against free radicals - molecules which accumulate in the body over time that can damage cells and are thought to play a role in heart disease, cancer and the ageing process.

The the study, Dr. Janszky and colleagues tracked 1,169 non-diabetic men and women, aged 45 to 70 yeards old, in Stockholm Country during the early 1990s from the time they were hospitalized with their first heart attack.

The participants were queried before leaving hospital on their food consumption habits over the previous year, including how much chocolate they ate on a regular basis.

"Our findings support increasing evidence that chocolate is a rich source of beneficial bioactive compounds," the researchers concluded.

The results held true for men and women and across all the age groups included in the study. Other factors that might have affected the outcome - alcohol consumption, obesity and smoking - were taken into account.

So should we all be loading up on cocoa-rich sweets?

"I'm pretty cautious about chocolate because we're working on weight problems with so many individuals," said Dr. Mukamal, who is also a physician.

"However, I do encourage those who are looking for healthier desserts to consider chocolate in small quantiies," he said.

"For individuals with no weight issues and who have been able to eat chocolate in moderation and remain slim, I do not limit it," he added.

The researches said that clinical trials were needed to back up their findings.

In the meantime, however, a bit of chocolate may not be amiss, they suggested.
